A young huntress. A deadly fae. Enough secrets
to destroy them all.
Danika and her brother, Damir, are Emyr members of
an elite guild who protect the people of Byrask from the fae that fill
their forests. They’re also broke and desperate. Which is why they agree
to take on a bounty for a deadly fae, even though everyone else who
dared to hunt him has died in the attempt. Danika might have misgivings
over the risk, but Damir is determined. And she’ll follow her brother
into the darkest abyss if she has to.
Velislav is a fae with blood on his
hands, leaving a path of bodies and terror in his wake. He is
everything Danika has been taught to despise about the bloodthirsty,
cunning, and careless with the lives he destroys. And he’s far more
powerful than any they’ve hunted before. So why, when they finally meet,
does he let them live? Why does he act like she's more than his enemy?
The longer Danika tracks Velislav, the more she wonders what’s really
going on between this deadly fae and the man who hired them to kill
him…and the more she wonders why Velislav seems so determined to keep
her alive.
She’s not supposed to show compassion toward their quarry.
She’s certainly not supposed to question if he’s truly the monster their
employer claimed. As the body count rises, and more and more secrets
come to light, Danika’s not sure she’s standing on the right side. But
when death surrounds her, and everyone involved seems to believe
spilling more blood is the only answer, what can she do? The path of the
hunter is forged in blood and bone. Can she find a way out? Or is she
already doomed to betray someone before this hunt ends?
I read and enjoyed the first book in this series of interconnected standalones, so I was excited to get the chance to read this one, too- especially since it's about monster hunters, which I enjoy. But I was not prepared to utterly love this book as much as I do! It is one of my top 5 reads of 2023 and I recommend it wholeheartedly.
I absolutely loved being in Danika's head and the idea of a brother and sister monster hunting duo. The moral conundrums Dani faced were so compelling. And then is Velislav, a dark fae with the ability to feed off fear. He's the type to slay his enemies first and ask questions later if there's time. With the exception of one sibling duo who are hunting him down. The character dynamics are impeccable and I just couldn't get enough. And this is a very long book, so one would think that I could, but no. If only it could have been longer.
Do yourself a favor and grab this book. The cover is gorgeous and the story is somehow even more beautiful.
Note to more sensitive readers: violence and on-screen killing; a fade-to-black scene.
I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.
This is PEAK fantasy with just the right amount of romance to fall in love and never want the story to end.
