Tora's murdered father's last wishes is that she finds his greatest samurai student, Niko, and instruct him to avenge his blood and protect his daughter. But Tora knows it is her duty to avenge him, if only a woman were allowed to fight . . .

Disguised as the son her father never had, Tora apprentices herself to Niko and begins to learn the samurai arts under his tutelage. There is one thing she did not account for, though. How much she wants Niko to know she is a woman.

This book is a bit of a dichotomy since the heroine is very young (nineteen at the start, but twenty how the world counts age) and innocent. However, the world she finds herself cast into after her father's passing is very much the opposite of innocent. Thus, I would classify this story strongly in my New Adult category rather than Young Adult.

Rating: PG-13 in movie terms and 16+ in my terms. There is no foul language, but there is both action and fantasy violence, macabre humor, horror elements, focus on crime, grief, and a romance with fourteen year age gap (though at this point in the series, it is very one-sided since he has NO idea). There is also ancestor veneration, spirits (which is pretty much the broad name for all the monsters), and inherited magic. To counter that, there is a Christian missionary, but at this point, he is the only Christian in the story.
