Excerpt of Fish out of Water


A splash breaks my train of thought.

Oh, no. Surely, he can’t have come after me.

Just in case he has, though, I swim deeper. But then hands grasp my tail fins.

I exhale several bubbles in surprise before I’m dragged back upward and find myself swung back to break the surface.

My arms hugging my chest in covering, I turn to the human who dared manhandle me.

And find myself staring into the stormy eyes I know well, though the rest of his face seems different somehow. Older, more mature. Fully-grown.

“Brandon?” I whisper.

His eyes narrow in confusion. “Astrid?”

“How is this happening?” I whisper.

“Where have you been?” he demands.

“I literally just went into the ocean hours ago.”

He shakes his head, those eyes narrowing in contempt now. “It’s been three years, Astrid.”
