Excerpt of Fish out of Water
“Three years?” I push away, shaking my head. “Why did the current take me back here? This doesn’t make sense.”
“Nothing about you makes sense, Astrid. You show up on my party celebrating my nomination to run for mayor after three years of no contact…” Brandon stops and studies me. “And are you… naked?”
“No,” I mutter, hugging myself tighter.
Muttering to himself, Brandon undoes a button-down white shirt while treading water and then tugs it over my shoulders. “We’ll figure this out later. For now we just have to get you of sight-”
“Brandon?!” someone calls from above. “Is that you down there?”
Brandon mutters something to himself before calling back up. “Thought I saw someone in trouble. I’ll be right up.”
“You really jumped down yourself-?” The person above seems to catch herself and calm herself in a second, because the next thing she yells down is much calmer. “Do you need a life preserver or something?”
“No. I’ll be right up.”
“Okay, but try not to let the reporter see you dripping wet.”
Brandon turns back to me, a grim expression on his face. “You have real good timing, you know that right? Had to be during my party, when I was wearing my nicest suit.”
“I didn’t exactly plan on this,” I mutter. “I was trying to rescue my sisters.”
“You still haven’t done that yet?”
