Review of A Spark of Storms by Susannah Welch

A flirty thief.

A dutiful prince.

Will she con him out of the treasure, or will she lose her heart instead?

Alanna is just a street rat struggling to stay alive. With the help of a few fancy dresses, she's learned how to charm unsuspecting men out of enough coins to pay her bills.

But all that changed when she stumbled onto Prince Jaemin in disguise. He's her perfect target: handsome, rich, and clueless. So why can't she bring herself to con him like all the others?

And when a magic lamp gives her the power to transform into a princess, Alanna will have to choose between the ultimate con or her heart.

A thrilling, playful retelling of Aladdin, A Spark of Storms is the first book of the Heart of the Queendom, a series of interconnected but stand-alone fairy tale retellings that feature strong heroines, mystery, and swoon-worthy happily ever afters.

This book was EXACTLY my cup of tea. One of my favorite things of all is secret identities- don't ask me why. Anyway, being a gender-swapped Aladdin retelling (more based on Disney's Aladdin than the original tale), our thief heroine has assumed a false identity as a princess in order to pull a heist for a mysterious Geenie. This involves getting close to at least one of the seven princes for access . . .

I loved the heroine, spunky and flirty and fun even though she struggles with her mother's illness. I loved the hero, somber and stubbornly immune to charm. I loved the Superman/Clark Kent/Lois Lane-like love triangle going on between them. And I also really enjoyed the world-building with is matriarchal politics and secret magic system of "sparks."  I look forward to the rest of the series, but it will be hard to top this book!

Note to more sensitive readers: There is some innuendo and a polytheistic religious system.

I received a copy of this novel from the author. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Anyway, if you're looking for a funny, swoony Aladdin retelling, this book is for you!
