Weekend Briefing: Countdown to Red as Blood
This book is especially dear to me, because of the relationships between the characters. There are Rose Red, the woman who has a second chance to save her sister from the same fate she barely saved herself from- even as she is facing a second chance with the man she left at the alter.
Then there is Blanca Red, the sister who has sown her wild oats, but is now learning the hard way why her sister left. She needs her help, even if she doesn't want it- and she certainly doesn't feel like she deserves the willingly given help of the missionary pastor who opens his home to her.
Matthew Bear is the sheriff who just wants to protect his town... and if he can somehow get the woman he loves to return his affections, he'll take that, too. He just hopes he's not putting his brother in danger to do that.
Teddy Bear (he's the baby of the family who can't shake his nickname, obviously) finds himself smitten with the younger sister of the woman who has stolen his brother's heart. But is he ready for everything she'll bring to his doorstep?
Especially since he has seven little dwarves- also known as adopted children- to keep safe.
There is also a huntsman known as the Raven who couldn't bear to kill the girl who was like a sister to him and a gypsy named Aurora who is waiting for him to wake up and walk away from the gang who raised him.
Finally, there is the gang leader, Queenie, who is desperate to remain the fairest of them all in order to keep the attention of the most generous supporter of their gang, Mr. Mirror.
The inauguration year of Queen Victoria means little in the wild west of the Americas...
Rose Red is a respectable woman now, and her past as a member of Queenie's cattle-wrangling gang is securely behind her. Until the sister she left behind appears at her door, desperate for help. With nowhere else to turn, Rose has to seek shelter from the sheriff... who also happens to be the man she stood up at the altar.
Blood is thicker than water.
When Blanca Red learns that Queenie means to have her killed, she flees for her life from the only family she's ever known. Other than the sister who abandoned her years ago. Now she and her estranged sister have to lay low with the sheriff's brother- and local preacher- who insists that her past isn't too much of an obstacle for her to become a church man's wife.
But as Rose could tell her sister, the past has a way of finding you again. And hers wants her dead.
The Clockwork Faerie Tale Novella series can be read as stand-alones or together, for whenever you want your steampunk happily ever after.
