Excerpt of Intergalactic Witness Protection

“We just gave him a little nap,” the woman assures. “I’m sure he’ll appreciate it when this is all over and he’s where he wants to be and well-rested.” Her gaze zeroes in on the Reverend. “My, aren’t you the handsome one.”
Reverend Shipping appears to be fighting the temptation to look behind him. “I am the ship’s chaplain. I’d be happy to exchange a service with you for the cure.”
“I’d be happy to exchange a service with you,” the woman says, my analysis detecting a hidden message in her words. She turns to the cyborg. “Take this one to my private quarters.”
I don’t even need to scan the Reverend to see that he’s choking on her words.
Wayta glances up, something icy in her eyes. “What about me? Am I not handsome enough to tempt you?”
“Yeah, but there’s two of you.” She flicks her hair again and gestures to her two male crew mates. “Escort the twins to the brig, and then search the ship for others.”
I quickly activate lock-down on the medic bay and set up the hologram to make it appear like there is only wall at each of its entrances.
“No, please!” Reverend Shipping yells, fighting at the cyborg now grabbing at his shoulders. “You can’t do this. It isn’t safe for-”
Activating my mental link with the Reverend, I say, “They won’t find your son or the others. But they must not know they exist, or they’ll look deeper.”
The Reverend’s eyes go wide, and I realize he’s probably never had a telepathic connection before.
“It’s me, Alicia Ivy,” I add quickly. “Please comply, and I’ll get us all out shortly. My captain and I have been in this situation before.”
“You mean the captain who is poisoned right now?” Out loud, the Reverend adds, “For you to be roughing up the man you poisoned.”
